Mr. F. RE-Reviews ... Bring it On

Well ... I guess this is the time to admit two major things:
1. NEVER review a show in previews
2. NEVER write a review when you are in a bad mood

I went to the second Broadway preview of the musical Bring It On, had a seating issue and was in a bad mood throughout most of the show (really Act 1) and the next day wrote a somewhat rough review of the show.  What do I mean by somewhat?  Well my review (read it here) was kind of negative.  So, I went to see it again, this time open and in a great mood!

First, it was obvious, to me nonetheless, that some changes that needed to be made - were in fact changed!  I enjoyed the music much more and the acting was superb.

The book, still witty, is fun and full of 'modern humor' (meaning jokes that are currently very relevant).  One of the biggest changes I noticed was lyric changes to songs that needed it.  One of my new favs is "We're Not Done" which was my least favorite in previews.  The music has great pop, rock, rap, and R&B feels to it - making it one of the most eclectic shows on Broadway.

The story line also seems to flow better.  The secondary characters in the show seem to infuse well with the primary characters and become more of a support and help to move the story along.

My only negative - really don't care for the use of the LED screens - sorry!  I will say "I GET IT".  As a show that travels (coming from a national tour) I understand how these screens can be effective and add to the ease of the show.  I would still love to see more of an actual set.  I would also love less per-recorded voices/music!

Quick Notes:
  • Who Should See It? As I said in the last review - if you were/are a cheerleader - SEE IT! You'll love it!  Great show for teens and adults!
  • Best part of the show? The cheering and stunts are incredible!!
  • Actor/Actress? Ryann Redmond as Bridget and Taylor Louderman still steel the show - with big props to Nicolas Womack!
  • Best Song? It's All Happening and It Ain't No Thing
